The Night Watchers of Whispering Pines Treehouses

At Whispering Pines Treehouses, life moves a little differently. Tucked away on our 100-acre farm, our treehouses were created as a place where people can step away from the constant noise of everyday life and connect with nature, loved ones, and themselves. Out here, mornings begin with birdsongs instead of alarm clocks, evenings are spent under starlit skies, and the gentle rustle of the pines which reminds us that sometimes the best thing we can do is simply slow down. Nature has a way of restoring us. One of our most meaningful reminders of that came a few years ago through a very special opportunity.

We were honored when Whispering Pines Treehouses was chosen by the World Bird Sanctuary to become the release site for a rehabilitated Great Horned owl. This magnificent bird had been injured and rescued by a kindhearted citizen before being carefully nursed back to health by the sanctuary’s dedicated team. Once it was strong enough to return to the wild, our property with its many open spaces, mature trees, and peaceful habitat was selected as the perfect place for its new beginning. It was a moment we’ll never forget, watching this incredible creature spread its wings and return to the skies where it belonged. The release was captured on video and can be viewed on our Facebook page (www.whisperingpinestreehouses.com).

That experience became even more meaningful when it turned into a family project. We built three owl houses in our garage after a Thanksgiving meal. Helping with the project was my 3-year-old granddaughter, whose tiny hands and curious heart made the experience unforgettable. Together, we talked about why animals need safe places to live and how even small acts of care can make a big difference. It was a simple but powerful lesson. It reminded me how important it is to teach the next generation to respect, protect, and care for the natural world around them.

Owls play a remarkable role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Great Horned owls are natural pest controllers, helping to keep rodent populations in balance. By hunting mice, rats, and other small animals, they help protect crops, forests, and fields from overpopulation and damage. They are also indicators of environmental health, meaning their presence often signals a thriving ecosystem. When owls have safe habitats to nest, hunt, and raise their young, it reflects a landscape that is rich, balanced, and cared for.

Caring for owls means caring for the larger world they help sustain. Preserving wooded spaces, protecting natural habitats, and being mindful of how we interact with wildlife all make a difference. Even something as simple as installing nesting boxes or leaving parts of natural land undisturbed can provide these beautiful birds with the shelter they need. Their amazing nighttime calls are more than just part of nature’s soundtrack; they are reminders that the land is alive, interconnected, and worth protecting.

Here at Whispering Pines Treehouses, we’re grateful to share our little corner of the world with creatures like the Great Horned owl. Every guest who stays with us becomes part of this story…a story of rest, renewal, and respect for the natural world. Guests have written in a journal in every treehouse; sharing their experiences which have warmed our hearts. As you sit by the firepit or hot tub, soak under the stars, or wake to the sounds of the woods, we hope you’ll feel that connection too. Sometimes, the greatest gift nature gives us is the chance to pause long enough to truly notice it.
